Psalm 139:14 - I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
One of the more well know and quoted scriptures (I even see it on t-shirts!) these days and rightfully so. It is poetic, beautiful and so true! I love the emphatic expression, “your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” I can literally hear how the psalmist said that with deep affection and in a matter-of-fact manner. How God must delight in our praise and awe of His goodness.
When I first read this scripture I admit I was confused because fearfully and wonderfully seem to be negating terms. Polar in spectrum. What does it mean to be fearfully and wonderfully made? We hear about the fear of God, and that has been so misinterpreted and perverted over time that it has lead so many into religious bondage, not excluding myself. To be fearful of God is not to be afraid OF God. It is to have extreme reverence for the majesty and sovereignty of God. It is actually to be so secure in God that we are afraid to be WITHOUT Him.
Many times I believe we look at God as OUR servant instead of the other way around. We may not do it intentionally. But in our prayers we come to Him with petition. “God bless me with….” , “God I need….” , “God help me…” We make it all about us. But how often do we bring our complete surrendered awe of Him and just say “Father… wow. You are AWE-SOME! (beholding awe of His being) You who created the vast depths of space and all the billions of stars and planets that hang perfectly in place. You who created the intricate biology and chemistry of our bodies that self-heal, that grow and change and adapt, down to the microscopic regenerating cellular level!!” He is a perfect creator and He wants to show us the mysteries that He has created just as a proud Father wants to show His children all of the good things He does! We often take it for granted and forget about the fearful (awe) position of our heart. In being fearful (reverent) we allow for an intimacy with our loving Father! It is not about being afraid, it is about allowing Him to draw us closer to Him!
It's all about identity. God showed me that it is not just about being made wonderfully. It is about being made to BE wonderful. Our identity is to be wonderful! It’s written in our DNA! He could have created us anyway He wanted to, but He created us in HIS image.
Genesis 1:27 - So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
For what purpose would God create us in His image? He didn’t create us like dogs, or rhinos, or dinosaurs. He created us in HIS image because we have specific purpose in Him. He is the ultimate creator and He placed the power of creation in us! Think about that! The power of HIS identity was placed in us!
What is the very thing that Satan attacks more than any other thing? Our identity. He starts on us from the time we are little children! So much of the unrest in the world is because we either don't know WHO we are or WHOSE we are. If we have come to an understanding of who we are; the enemy throws the distraction and confusion and noise of the world at us relentlessly so we may become distracted and forget who we are! While I am not one to ever speak any credit to the enemy because frankly he doesn't deserve anything but punishment from God, he is masterful in his lies. Misery and lies are his nature and misery loves company.
John 8:44 - He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
1 Peter 5:8 - Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Be alert and of sober mind. God is saying here. PAY ATTENTION because his voice comes, not always as a roaring lion. It sometimes comes as a prowling lion. How does a lion prowl? Silently, undetected, luring his prey into the false security that they are safe, and then in one swift motion he has you in his filthy jaws. But let’s be clear about something. It says he is LIKE a roaring lion. He may roar loudly in our ear and cause us to fear or be distracted, but the truth is that he has NO power over us unless we give it to him.
So what does that prowling look like? How about the lies of insecurity that you hear in your own head? "I just wish I was pretty like her." or “I wish I was successful like that guy.” or “If only I was skinny” or “If I had more money I would be happy.” Or how about some of these less obvious ones? “I am ok, I am a good person.” or “I don’t need to pray, I know God loves me.” or “I don’t need to go to church, God knows I am not a bad person.” Or an even more prowling lie… “I go to church and make time for God on Sundays. That’s enough.”
Satan is not worried about us going to church. He is worried about us understanding our identity in God! When we understand our identity in God we empower and release in our lives, the resources of the Creator of all things!
We are fearfully and wonderfully made. His works are wonderful. I know that full well.
Blessings to you in Jesus’ name.
